As we have now entered the month of February, I wanted to send a message highlighting the most pressing "tasks" for Seniors right now.  As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or needs, please do not hesitate to reach out to me anytime!  1 - SCHOLARSHIPS We are in the thick of Scholarship Season!  Keep up to date on all scholarship deadlines as most private scholarships are due between February and March.  Any scholarship information that is shared with my office at school will be available on my DTHS Scholarship List . https://nikkisjuts.weebly.com/seniors.html I update this spreadsheet as often as I can, but at least every 2 weeks right now.   2 - FAFSA A reminder that ALL seniors are required to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as a Nebraska State Graduation Requirement.  I have included my previous in-depth information about the FAFSA at the bottom of this message, but here are a couple of resources that can provide your family assistance in this process. I know that this can feel like a daunting task, but there is help available!     FAFSA COMPLETION SESSION: I recently received information about some FAFSA Completion Sessions in which financial aid professionals from Central Community College, Hastings College and UNK will assist seniors and their families with completing the FAFSA process!   This looks like an awesome opportunity to get FAFSA help - check it out if you are still stressed about the FAFSA process!  You must have your FSA ID process completed before attending - ideally 3 days before the session. The remaining sessions are: Saturday, February 8 at CCC-Kearney Center - 9am-Noon Saturday, February 22 at CCC-Grand Island - 9am-Noon Link to Information Form: CCC FAFSA Completion Session Form  EDUCATION QUEST EducationQuest is a free service that is available to help answer any of your questions about the FAFSA process.  These people are AMAZING and are more than willing to help with the entire process, any questions, or if you have issues completing any part of the FAFSA.  Please utilize them as they really are the experts!  Simply go to: www.educationquest.org to get in contact with them!

Our preschoolers were not at school on Friday when we announced our January students of the month, so they get their own post today! These kiddos have been safe, respectful, and responsible at school! Keep up the great work.

Our January teacher of the month is Mrs. Dyer! Mrs. Dyer taught our preschoolers last year, but moved up to teach 2nd this year! Mrs. Dyer has a great sense of humor and builds great relationships with her students. Mrs. Dyer has worked hard to learn all about 2nd grade and has worked well with her teaching partner to prepare fun engaging lessons for all students. Congrats Mrs. Dyer! We are so happy to have you here at DT.

Next week is National School Counseling Week and we are going to celebrate in the elementary by focusing on the amazing skills and strategies the students learn during their guidance time. Each day of the week has a different focus where the students review the skill at both school and home. On Monday we will focus on mindfulness and students will have a task to complete. On Tuesday we will have students wear their favorite team jersey to show they understand the importance of being a good team player! On Wednesday, we will celebrate taking care of our mind and body by wearing our favorite athletic wear! On Thursday we will discuss gratitude and students will again have a task to do. On Friday students will be allowed to bring a SMALL stuffed animal to show they understand that playing with or petting a pet can lower stress levels. We hope to spread awareness on the social emotional learning that takes place at DT! We are so lucky to learn these important skills at such a young age. Below is the note you will get to help you practice the activities at home so we can all get better together. THANK YOU!

Elementary students are learning how to solve problems using the STEP process during guidance time. This process is introduced to kindergarteners, practiced in grades 1-5, and expanded in 6th grade. It is a simple 4 step process that is easy for students to use when problems arise. It is researched that children who can solve problems get along better with others, are less aggressive, and have fewer conflicts. Before the STEP process can happen one must be calm and in the green zone to begin. Students have practiced many ways to calm down so please practice these steps at home to help them become independent problem solvers! STEP 1: Say the Problem (without blame) STEP 2: Think of Solutions (safe & respectful) STEP 3: Explore the Outcomes (how will others feel, how will I feel) STEP 4: Pick the Best Solution (make a plan) Please practice these steps at home when problems come up. Make sure your child(ren) are calm before you ask them what is wrong. Suggest they take some deep breaths, take a short break, or go on a walk so they are ready to think and process the issue. The kids are working hard so please help us by using the same language at home! Together we can be the best problem solvers around. If you have any questions please email Mrs. Breckner.
