On Sept. 14th, 2021, on a Tuesday evening, the DT volleyball team traveled to Gibbon to compete in a triangular with The Gibbon Buffaloes and Central City Bison. The Cardinals had to play back-to-back games but still came out victorious.
Sophie Fitch, a senior outside hitter, said, “We came out a little slow against Central City but put that game away pretty easily. Against Gibbon, however, we were ready for what they had coming for us. We played really good defense and were ready for all of the short balls. Overall, I thought we came together as a team really well and our passing was on point all night.”
The Cardinals were a 500 team with a record of 5 and 5 before this triangular, playing some talented teams. Their wins consist of Centura, Blue Hill, Sutton, Sandy Creek and Arcadia Loup City. Sutton was a big win for the Lady Cardinals. Sutton had been undefeated until the team beat them in 3 well-fought sets. Wood River gave the team their first loss at a triangular in Blue Hill. Other teams that they lost to are Kenesaw, Grand Island Central Catholic, and Superior. The girls faced The superior wildcats twice and were defeated both times. First at a home triangular and then again at the Sandy Creek Tournament. The girls fought hard against superior but could never overcome the team. These previous games made the girls ready to play in the triangular Tuesday. The team’s record is now 7-5 hoping to keep bringing in the wins.
Kaleah Olson, sophomore middle hitter said, “In the Central City game I thought we started off kind of slow and were making a lot of silly mistakes, but we overcame them and came together as a team to get the win. I also think our defense and serve receive were doing really well. These two games were really great wins for us.”
In the first game of the night against Central City, the girls came out victorious winning in two. The final score of the first set was 25-12 and the second set was 25-19. Fitch led in kills with a total of 11, Olson followed with 6. The juniors had a good night of kills too, Madie Olser ended with 4, Kayla Kennedy and Addie Fay got 3 each. Sophomore Emily Shimmin the setter with a total of 24 assists. The defense stepped up to the line, led by senior libero Kendyl Brummand who had 14 digs.
Head Coach Gina Fitch said, “I think the girls did a really great job and came together great as a team. We came in knowing that these were two very good teams, and we would have to come and play. In practice, we have been working a lot with running through our defense, and I think the girls executed that very well the last two games.”
In the second game against Gibbon, the girls came out winning in two again. The final scores came to 25-9 and 25-7. The Lady Cardinals came out very strong and finished strong. Olson lead the team in kills with 6, followed by Fitch with 5, Fay with 4, Kennedy with 3 and Osler and Dylan Hasset with 2 each. This was a big serving game for the Cardinals. Emily Shimmin had 20 serves in all in the game.
The Cardinals hope to continue this game-winning stretch next week against St. Cecilia and Adams Central.
