The freshman FCS class went head-to-head in a Cupcake Wars battle. Teams assigned by the FCS teacher Mrs. Joanna Heurman, worked hard to make 24 cupcakes and a display that fits the assigned theme of Fall. But there's a twist, each group had to  incorporate their own secret ingredient.

“The Cupcake Wars competition requires the groups to create a 24 cupcake display where they will incorporate a secret ingredient into their cupcakes and cupcake icing. They are required to make the cupcakes and icing from scratch,” said Heuermann.

To win the Cupcake Wars, the winning team must have the most outstanding cupcakes and display. The teams are being judged on a variety of different factors, including: outside characteristics of the cupcakes, texture and moisture level of the cupcakes, flavor and aroma, recipe explanation, how they present to the judges and the overall look of the cupcakes. The team with the best cupcakes will get to take home the first place prize.

The learning objectives for this competition was to apply the skills they learned during their measuring ingredients. The class learned about the proper equipment to measure liquid vs. dry ingredients.

Students were given a total of two weeks to complete their display and cupcakes. In the first week, the teams started off with brainstorming and designing ideas for their display. The next week is when they started baking and decorating their cupcakes.

“This project was lots of fun, it made us think and we had to come together as a team,” said freshman Kinlee Stewart.

The judges of the competition are Mrs. Turner, Mr. Gehring, Mr. Mogilefski and Mrs. Reich. They will be judging on which team has the best tasting cupcakes and by the looks of their display.

The overall winner of the Cupcake Wars competition was the purple kitchen. This team includes Jett Hollister, Logan Rainforth, Andy Schultz and Alexis Uhrich. Their cupcake called “Hot Chocolate Delight” wowed the judges.

“ I enjoyed working with my team. We were really excited when they announced our cupcakes as first place,” said freshman Logan Rainforth.
